Technology
In the Genetic Disorder Research project, students will be utilizing technology to find and present information on their chosen genetic disorder. Students will use resources such as databases and Google Scholar to find a current, relevant article on their genetic disorder. They will also learn which websites are qualified as appropriate resources (for example, a University website versus Wikipedia). Once they have found and organized their information, they will then present their information to the class via a multimedia format of their choice. Some options for their multimedia project include creating a PowerPoint, or using innovative websites such as Glogster, Prezi, or SlideRocket.
In the Vocabulary Acquisition lesson, I present a Glogster I created on key information students need to know about basic Mendelian genetics. Also in the Vocabulary Acquisition lesson, students complete independent practice on vocabulary words by playing "Science Vocabulary Hangman".
My Inquiry lesson is presented through SMARTBoard technology, and has several interactive components, such as a Venn Diagram where students can drag and drop information into the appropriate sections of the Venn Diagram. They also independently explore the concepts of Mitosis and Meiosis by using this website.
For my post-assessment, I will be utilizing a tic-tac-toe choice board. Several of the options could be completed by utilizing technology. One option is to create a Voki to explain pedigrees. Another option is to create a poster teaching someone how to use Punnet Squares, which could be completed by hand or by using a website such as Glogster. Students may also create a concept map using websites such as Bubbl, and can easily create a brochure using Microsoft Word software.
Below are some supplemental websites that would be helpful to better understand information presented in this unit.
Heredity Crash Course: this witty, informative video gives you a ten minute "crash course" on genetics. Everything you need to know is NOT presented in this video, but it will still be helpful to watch! :)
Drag and Drop Genetics: this website allows you to easily practice Punnet Squares on your computer or smart phone.
Mitosis Hands: this short video will help you remember the phases of mitosis in order if you are having trouble memorizing them!
